Educating Clinicians Across the Country on Trauma-Focused Care:
The Extraordinary Successes of TF-CBTWeb
TF-CBTWeb passed an impressive landmark in mid-May -- more than 5,000 users have accessed this innovative training on Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) in its first seven months of existence. This web-based curriculum arose from a collaboration among several Network centers, including:
- National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center (Medical University of South Carolina);
- Center for Traumatic Stress in Children and Adolescents (Allegheny General Hospital);
- Child Abuse Research Education and Service (CARES) Institute (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey);
- Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress (Harborview Medical Center); and
- Child Trauma Treatment Network—Intermountain West (Primary Children’s Medical Center).
The National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center at the Medical University of South Carolina worked with distance- and web-based learning experts in and out of their university to develop a platform that transforms the successful TF-CBT curriculum into a web-based format. In designing this website, they sought:
- Ease of use - with standalone modules and “anytime” access to the training;
- Dedication to adult learning principles - with multiple modes of media (text, audio, and video) and practical demonstration of techniques; and
- Recognition of clinicians’ limitations - their busy schedules, limited time and money for external training, and need for Continuing Education Units.
